A weak, puny man lifting himself up against the very God who was holding his breath (v. 23)! Stuart Olyott puts Daniel’s message to Belshazzar in these words: Your secret sins and open sins, your misspent hours, your cruelty, pride, wild disorders, and drunkenness, your neglect of holy things and your spiritual resistance—God has weighed it all up. Each one has gone into His balance. He has considered your life from beginning to end, and it does not come up to the mark. It does not satisfy His standards.
